Lessons from the Wilderness 19: Sin and Presence - two contrasts that need to be addressed.

Lessons from the Wilderness, Volume 19
…Sin’s Presence – His Presence…[1][2]

Romans 7:14-17 (NKJV)

14 …For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, nsold under sin. 15 For what I am doing, I do not understand. oFor what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do. 16 If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the Torah that it is good. 17 But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me… [3]

(Rom 7:14-17 CJB)

…For we know that the Torah is of the Spirit; but as for me, I am bound to the old nature, sold to sin as a slave. I don't understand my own behavior — I don't do what I want to do; instead, I do the very thing I hate! Now if I am doing what I don't want to do, I am agreeing that the Torah is good. But now it is no longer "the real me" doing it, but the sin housed inside me…[4]

Father G-d, bless this reading of your Holy Word this day, and open our hearts to the message You are about to give amein and amein…

Let us pause here, at this place in Scripture and let me read a brief quote to you from A.W. Pink, a noted preacher, writer and author of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.  He said:

“…There are two sides to a Christians’ life: a light and a dark, an elevating and a depressing one… His experience is neither all joy, nor is it all grief, but a mixture of both…”[5]

The past few months have proven Pastor Pink’s words true, as we have seen both – the dark and the light, grief and - though not yet-  we will see the joy.  The dark is in the fact that we have seen the evil of the world exposed; we have seen the thin blue line thinned even more; we have seen our soldiers come home for the last time; we have seen continuous sorrows all around, yet the light is in how all have reached out to those affected and how we are now coming together.  Our nation’s Constitution is under attack by the left that hates it, the loved ones lost, grieve us, but the light must continue to shine in the lives of those affected, so don’t forget those who have been left behind, and pray that G-d’s mercy still hangs over this nation.  But light and dark, joy and grief – these we struggle with, these two conflicting parts of our walk with Mashiach, with Christ.  On one hand, we see how the sweet indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit helps to comfort us, yet on the other, we have come face to face with that which also indwells us all – and that is sin. 

Let us continue reading G-d’s word:

Romans 7:18-20 (NKJV)

18 …For I know that pin me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. 19 For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. 20 Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me…[6]

…For I know that there is nothing good housed inside me — that is, inside my old nature. I can want what is good, but I can't do it! For I don't do the good I want; instead, the evil that I don't want is what I do! But if I am doing what "the real me" doesn't want, it is no longer "the real me" doing it but the sin housed inside me… [7]

We struggle with this body of death every day.  It is not just the body we live in but also is the body of death that is this world and the culture of it that we live in.  Every day we are surrounded by its evil; it calls out to us from every magazine, movies, television and radio. We see the hate and intolerance of those who call themselves “woke” – the only thing that they are “woke” to is disdain, anger and hate.  We get blasted by the pornography on the internet, on our cell phones, in music and books. We see the slaughter of the unborn heralded as some sort of “civil right”: how is the dismemberment of a living child in the womb ever considered a “right”?  Our children are bombarded in social media, tv, radio and schools about how they can deny biology, defy the natural order and become whatever they desire to be, even if it is at the cost of their bodies, souls and minds. Everyday our souls are under attack and are beaten down by this never-ending call to sin.  We can pass by a church but can’t seem to be able to pass the bar or casino and in the mirror, we don’t even take a look at our own lives.  I’m going to be blunt now brethren, hear me and hear me good – there is not one of us reading this today, and I include myself in this, that is not committing suicide – we are just doing it slowly, so slowly we don’t even see it.

Every drink or drug we take – we are killing ourselves.
Every cigarette we smoke – we are killing ourselves.
Every unborn child killed in the name of “choice”- kills us all.
Every child that is mutilated by the alphabet community – kills not only themselves 
but humanity itself.
Every time we watch or read pornography – we are killing ourselves.
Every movie we watch that does not glorify G-d – we are killing ourselves.
Every time we engage in sex outside the bounds of marriage – we are killing ourselves.
Everything and anything in which we do if it does not exalt
the Living and True G-d is killing us.

We are killing ourselves even in the way we dress: how you ask?  Look at what you wear – does it edify G-d, or is it full of the symbols of death, skulls and flames?  Do we dress modestly, or do we dress to impress, to attract others to us, the allure of our bodies?  If we are not reflecting the holiness of G-d in how we dress, we are killing ourselves!  By our disobedience to the Word of G-d, by our failure to bow our knees to G-d and His Christ, we are killing ourselves!  If we are not daily picking up our cross and mortifying the deeds of the flesh by dying to ourselves – then truly, truly I say – we are killing not only our bodies, but also our souls.

Children: if you disrespect and disobey your parents – you are killing yourselves.
Parents: if you are not living a life of godliness – you are killing yourselves and your children.

Fathers: if you are not submitting yourselves to the headship of Jesus Christ and taking on the hard role of the spiritual leader in your house – you are killing yourself and your family.

Mothers and wives:  if you are not standing besides you husband as his help-mate, and coming in agreement with him as he takes his role as leader of your family, and if you don’t back him up as he makes right decisions based upon the word of G-d – you are killing yourself, and him, and your children.

Young men: if you are lending yourselves to unrighteousness, to partying, to swearing, to fighting, to drink, or smoke, or drugs or sex – you are killing yourselves.

Teachers, if you are echoing the harmful lies of an amoral society that preys on the defenseless children under your care, if you refuse to take a stand against the insanity that has permeated this culture of death we live in, then not only are you the problem, but you are also the destroyers of worlds - killers of the innocent and killers of your own soul.

Young ladies: if you are compromising your walk with Jesus Christ by going along with anything that I’ve already said – you are killing yourselves and the future, for you will be the mothers of the future one day; do not sell yourselves short for a promise of love; if they really love you, they, the young men, will honor you and wait for you, and put a ring on your hand in marriage; don’t kill the future.

Congregation:  if you are not interceding every day always praying before the Father for the souls and needs of those around you – you are killing yourselves and them.

Pastors and teachers: hear me
If you are not teaching Torah, the instructions of G-d;
If you are not preaching against sin;
If you yourself do not hate sin with all of your might and being;
If you are not preaching the whole counsel of the Living Word of Truth;
- You are killing yourselves and your flock –
And the list is endless!

Sin dwells within us…  O why I ask, O why O G-d do you leave this sin, this poison within me!  Why must we struggle so?

There is an answer.  It is to keep me humble, to cast down my pride so that my soul will be preserved.  It is so that my eyes are not lifted up upon my haughtiness, my arrogance, but are lifted upon Him, His cross, Him alone.

Within me is no good thing – it is only by His will, by His grace and mercy do I even draw another breath!  I pick up His book, His Holy righteous Word and I have to know one thing:
It is one book.

The Torah, or as it is incorrectly translated, the Law, has to guide my life, or I will do what I do not want to do for “…the law (Torah) is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good…” [8] If I go against what is holy, I will kill myself, for without the Torah of G-d, I can only draw from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil;

- and this tree has slayed me from the very beginning -

This tree bids me to choose what is good or what is evil:

*      I think I know what is right – but it kills me.
*      I do what I think is right – and it kills me.
*      I try to be holy in my own way – and I only kill myself.

All these things I do are because I try to decide for myself what is good and what is evil…

This tree is killing me
And it is killing you

There is only one thing that can save us – His Presence.

“…O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the bodyd of this death? 25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord…”  [9]

In Matthew 28:20, Christ tells the disciples:

“…lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen…” [10]

These words are meant for all believers; let us take a closer look at this marvelous promise…

“Lo!” - (Behold He says!) “Oh listen well, consider what I say carefully…”

“I” -  Who am I? I am the lover of your soul, your Kinsman redeemer, the one who shed His blood for you –
 Son of the Creator, Maker of all things, the Holy One of Israel –  that “I”…

“am with you” – Not away from you not as someone who just drops in now and then, but WITH you, besides you, in you – and I send My angels to watch over you and guard you, My Spirit I send to comfort and guide you, My Blood shall cover you…

“always” – All the days, continually, completely, Forever…

“even unto the end of the world– The end of your earthly travels, to the end of your life and beyond;
If heaven and earth pass away will I leave you? Never.  Never.  No matter what you might do, if you are mine, to the Olam haBa – the end of the world--I’ll be there…

“Amen” – It is sealed, finished; I have spoken it as Truth, promised to you by the One who cannot lie…

‘…lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen…” [11]

There is no greater promise, no greater gift for in this one statement, nothing more can be added or needs to be said.

He promised His presence – always.  It is in our own lack of understanding of this most cherished promise that we continue to struggle with the sin that dwells within.  The only way that this sin can have any power over us is in our failure to know Who it is that is with us…

Isaiah 41:10 (NKJV)

10     nFear not, ofor I am with you;
Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you,
Yes, I will help you,
I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’ [12]
Two presences.  Light and dark, sin and Messiah.

A broken heart sometimes cannot see but only one presence – yet there is One who sits upon the throne that sees all broken hearts – and a broken and contrite heart He will not despise.

Remember the warning G-d gave to Cain when his offering was not accepted:

Genesis 4:3-7 (Tanach)
3In the course of time, Cain brought an offering to the Lord from the fruit of the soil; 4and Abel, for his part, brought the choicest of the firstlings of his flock. The Lord paid heed to Abel and his offering, 5but to Cain and his offering He paid no heed. Cain was much distressed, and his face fell. 6And the Lord said to Cain,

“Why are you distressed,
And why is your face fallen?
7cSurely, if you do right,
There is uplift.
But if you do not do right
Sin couches at the door;
Its urge is toward you,
Yet you can be its master.” [13]

Let us be clear about what sin is, what crouches at each of our doors. In 1 John 3:4, we have the definition of sin:

4     Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and asin is lawlessness. [14]

What is lawlessness? Baker’s Evangelical Dictionary of Biblical Theology says this:

                 “…Lawlessness and Righteousness. In Romans 6:19, 2 Corinthians 6:14, and Hebrews 1:9, "lawlessness" as a state or condition is contrasted with righteousness. Righteousness is the condition characteristic of faith, while lawlessness is the condition characteristic of unbelief. As the contrast continues, it becomes clear that the two categories have nothing in common; they are as different as light and darkness. Moreover, as Hebrews 1:9 (quoting Psalm 45:7 ) reveals, the Son distinguishes himself in manifesting the attitude of God toward these two states: he hates lawlessness but loves righteousness. Lawlessness is the state defined by sin and sinning; righteousness, both declared and bestowed by God on believers, creates the possibilities of obedience and holiness. Finally, Romans 6:19 makes it clear that the Christian has a conscious choice to make: to live in the condition of lawlessness and do its deeds, or to serve righteousness and do its deeds…
…Sin is thus an act of rebellion against God, and cannot be thought of as harmless, neutral, or imaginary. Through the category of lawlessness, John clarifies that one cannot sin without declaring oneself to be in direct opposition to God. Romans 4:7 (quoting Psalm 32:1 ; see also Num 14:18 ) makes the same connection between sin and Acts of lawlessness. Together with passages such as Titus 2:14 and Hebrews 10:17, Romans 4:7 indicates that Acts of lawlessness and the rebellious condition of fallen humankind that issues in these Acts stand in need of God's forgiveness. Receiving the righteousness of God depends on being forgiven…”[15]

 And what is rebellion?

1 Samuel 15:22-29 (Wordstudy KJV)
22
And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.
Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee being king.

24 And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice. 25 Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the Lord. 26 And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord hath rejected thee from being king over Israel. 27 And as Samuel turned about to go away, he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent. 28 And Samuel said unto him, The Lord hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbor of thine, that is better than thou. 29 And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent. [16]

So, let us be sure of this: sin, the breaking of G-d’s Torah, is not a mere thing. It has consequences far beyond just the act. Cain’s sin affected his entire line, all of his children, all of his wives, all who followed him.

Sin has a progression:
“…1. Sin
#2403. hajx  chatta'ah,  khat-taw-aw' from #2398.
ajx  chata',  khaw-taw' to miss, hence (figuratively and generally) to sin;

2. Transgression
#6588. evp  pesha`,  peh'-shah, a revolt, to break away from a just authority

3. Iniquity
#5771. Nwe  `avon,  aw-vone'  perversity, to twist or distort

Shema means to hear and obey so the next sin is direct disobedience:
Deuteronomy 28:45 (NET)
45
All these curses will fall on you, pursuing and overtaking you until you are destroyed, because you would not obey the Lord your God by keeping his commandments and statutes that he has given you. [17]

4. Not Obey
#8085. emv  shama`,  shaw-mah'
(Refuse) to hear intelligently (often with implication of attention, obedience)

We are to serve God so what follows is a direct refusal to by serving other gods:
Deuteronomy 8:19 And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the LORD thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish.

5. Refusal to serve God
#5647. dbe  `abad,  aw-bad' to work (in any sense); by implication, to serve, enslave, etc.:--X be, keep in bondage.

Now it progresses to acting treacherously, translated as trespass:
See Numbers 31:6-16; the Midianites were guilty of the sin of Ba’al Peor, a grievous sexual sin and the sacrifice of children. The army of the Hebrews did not follow G-d’s instructions regarding the Midianites.

6. To act treacherously
#4604. lem  ma`al,  mah'-al  from 4603; treachery, i.e. sin: falsehood, grievously, sore, transgression, trespass, X very.

This is followed by outright rebellion:
Isaiah 1:18-20 (NET)

1:1844 Come, let’s consider your options,”45 says the Lord.
“Though your sins have stained you like the color red,
you can become46 white like snow;
though they are as easy to see as the color scarlet,
you can become47 white like wool.48
1:19 If you have a willing attitude and obey,49
then you will again eat the good crops of the land.
1:20 But if you refuse and rebel, you will be devoured50 by the sword.”
Know for certain that the Lord has spoken.51 ([18])


7. To make God bitter by being stubbornly disobedient
#4784  hrm  marah,  maw-raw'  to make bitter (figuratively) to rebel

This develops into wickedness:

For so says the high and lofty One who inhabits eternity; whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, even with the contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. For I will not contend forever, nor will I be always angry; for the spirit should fail before Me, and the souls I have made. For the iniquity of his covetousness I was angry and struck him; I hid Myself, and was angry, and he went on turning away in the way of his heart. I have seen his ways, and will heal him. I will also lead him, and restore comforts to him and to his mourners. I create the fruit of the lips; peace, peace, to him far off, and to him near, says Jehovah; and I will heal him.
But the wicked are like the troubled sea, which cannot rest, and its waters cast up mire and dirt. There is no peace, says my God, to the wicked.[19]

8. To be wicked with strong excitement

We have a similar Hebrew word also translated as iniquity with the aleph at the beginning rather than the Ayin:

Micah 2:1 Woe to them that devise iniquity and work evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they practice it, because it is in the power of their hand.

9. To live worthlessly or without any worthy purpose
205.  Nwa  'aven,  aw-ven' to pant (hence, to exert oneself, usually in vain; to come to naught); strictly nothingness;

Concluding with the Hebrew word for evil:

Genesis 6:5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

10. To spoil or dash to pieces the moral worth 
7451.  er  ra`,  rah  evil (natural or moral):--  affliction, calamity…”[20]

                         This progression leads only one place: death.

G-d is greater than any darkness, any broken heart, any shattered dream and He will help you – He has promised.  Here today though, it is time you hear the truth.  We can choose our sin, but we cannot choose the consequence, G-d will bring that upon you, measure for measure. How is one to escape this great tragedy?

  Take this promise, meditate upon it, live in it, walk in it – let the sweetness of this promise – “…I am with you always, even unto the end of the world…” [21] - sink deep into you soul.  Let it guide you and shape you.  Let those words comfort you and heal you.  Let them be the words that unchain you from the body of death.  If you are His – grasp a-hold of these words and never let go of them.  If you aren’t His – then– take a long look at your lives.  If they are not showing the evidence of a heart that has been changed by the Spirit of the Living G-d I have only this to tell you:



O turn ye sinner from the darkness that threatens to overwhelm you …For it is killing you…

T'shuvah! Turn back to G-d!

Cry out to Him for Mercy!
Cry out to Him for Grace!
Cry out for His Shed Blood to Redeem you!
Cry out to Him to come and dwell within…

T'shuvah! Turn back to G-d!

We all need to.
Put down that fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and plant yourself beside the Tree of Life from which flows rivers of Living Water… Let the Tree of Life kill the old you… and give to you, life anew.

T'shuvah! Turn back to G-d, for the Kingdom of G-d is at hand, And the Almighty King is calling.

Will He be a sweet presence in your heart, healing and comforting, or will He be a consuming fire?

I pray He be with you always.

Beloved, may the Lord richly bless you, and keep you and give you His Shalom this day…

50 sn The wordplay in the Hebrew draws attention to the options. The people can obey, in which case they will “eat” v. 19 (תֹּאכֵלוּ [tokhelu], Qal active participle of אָכַל) God’s blessing, or they can disobey, in which case they will be devoured (Heb “eaten,” תְּאֻכְּלוּ, [ukkélu], Qal passive/Pual of אָכַל) by God’s judgment.
51 tn Heb “for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” The introductory כִּי (ki) may be asseverative (as reflected in the translation) or causal/explanatory, explaining why the option chosen by the people will become reality (it is guaranteed by the divine word).
